Suspect In Brockton Hit-And-Run Held On $750K Bail

BROCKTON (CBS) -- The suspect in a hit-and-run accident that left a 13-year-old boy seriously injured in Brockton Wednesday was arraigned Thursday morning in Brockton District Court.

Christopher Jansky, 39, of Las Vegas, Nevada, was arrested at his mother's house in Abington Wednesday night. He was charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury and driving a motor vehicle with a suspended license, subsequent offense. He pleaded not guilty and was held on $750,000 bail.

Police said Jansky hit the boy, Elias Lebon, at the intersection of Cross and Winslow Streets around 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The boy suffered a broken leg, and was in serious condition Wednesday night at Boston Children's Hospital.

Accident reconstruction determined that the boy traveled 57 feet from the point of impact to where he landed.

At Jansky's arraignment, prosecutors said he planned to flee to Las Vegas with his girlfriend after the crash. The judge called him "a menace to society" and "basically a career criminal," and set his bail even higher than the Commonwealth recommended.

Jansky's defense attorneys claimed there were "a number of identification issues" in the case, and said that no witnesses put Jansky behind the wheel of the white Kia sedan police believe hit Lebon--though Jansky's girlfriend did say the two were in the car.

That car was later found on Chatham West Drive, where an acquaintance of Jansky lived, with heavy damage to the windshield. Police said injuries to Jansky's knuckles were consistent with a shattered windshield.

Police said the car had been rented from Logan Airport. They said Jansky was here visiting his girlfriend and mother.

Residents told WBZ-TV's Nicole Jacobs Wednesday that Cross Street is often used as a "raceway," and said they want the crash to serve as a wake-up.
