Suspect Arrested After Brazen Shooting In Roxbury

BOSTON (CBS) - One suspect is in custody, and a shooting victim is recovering after shots rang out before noon at 42 Walnut Park in Roxbury.

A construction worker even ducked for cover as one of the bullets hit the truck he had just exited. "Boom, boom, boom, five shots. I ran but I don't know who ran faster," said the worker who did not want to be identified.

It all unfolded right in front of a nearby detail officer working with a sidewalk repair crew. The suspect brazenly fired at the victim, and witnesses say he made no attempt to hide his crime.

"He looked at the cop, pulled his gun out and shot the kid. Then he threw his gun at the cop," said the construction worker.

That's when the officer took off after the shooter, calling in a description as he ran, and helping police apprehend the suspect a few blocks away. Police then searched the neighborhood for the shooting victim who had also fled, combing through nearby yards, and Massachusetts State Police sending up a helicopter.

The victim, police say, had been shot in the leg multiple times and took himself to a nearby hospital to be checked out.

The heavy police presence was both startling and comforting to neighbors who gave all the credit to the quick thinking detail officer. "To me it was a miracle he was here," said Judith Lamb.

Police recovered the firearm at the scene.
