Boston Teachers Union Outraged Over Salary Study Findings

BOSTON (CBS) --  The Boston Teachers Union is outraged over a new study that claims its city's teachers are paid significantly more than teachers in comparable cities.

The study, conducted by Education Resource Strategies and paid for by a non-profit, found that Boston teachers get paid, on average, over $88,564 in salary and $18,645 in benefits --  about 30 percent more than teachers elsewhere.

Union president Richard Stutman said the report used 7-year old data from a limited number of cities that do not really compare to Boston's standard of living.

"Had the report used comparable data from representative cities such as Chicago, San Francisco and New York, and not Syracuse, Buffalo and the Aldine, Tx. school district, the results of the report would have been markedly different," Stutman said in a public statement.

The report also counted health insurance costs in its pay, which are higher in Boston than in other cities included in the report, Stutman said.

The report was released right before the start of budget negotiations.
