Keller @ Large: 'One Boston Day' Shows How Caring People Can Be

BOSTON (CBS) - Friday is the second annual "One Boston Day," a now-permanent occasion to honor the generosity and sense of community that emerged in the wake of the vicious attacks on Boston Marathon spectators three years ago.

Many of us will be participating in volunteer or charitable activities to mark the day, and kudos to everyone doing so.

Then again, some of us – too many of us, it seems – will spend the day lost in their usual narcissistic fog.

Folks like the 110 drivers pulled over by West Bridgewater police in just four hours on Wednesday after they were observed texting behind the wheel.

After years of publicity surrounding the dangers of this needless, careless activity – including heartbreaking stories of lives lost as a result – the practice is still apparently widespread, and the stupidity behind it unbridled.

One driver stopped and cited by the cops in West Bridgewater was stopped again a little later, and explained to the incredulous officers that he "thought you had left the area for the day."

Meanwhile, the head of a major movie-theater chain says he may have to open up special theaters that allow texting by customers so shallow and lazy they can't be bothered to put the phone down for a couple of hours, or at least respect other patrons by leaving the auditorium to gawk at it.

One Boston Day makes you realize how caring and thoughtful people can be.

Stories like these about the texters remind us how careless and thoughtless too many others are.
