Salem Police Search For Suspect Who Shot At Officers

SALEM (CBS) – Police in Salem are searching for a suspect who fired a gun at officers Thursday night.

At about 6:15 p.m. two Salem Police officers were attempting to arrest a man on Fairfield Street when he pulled out a gun and allegedly fired at the officers.

"The next thing I heard, a pop! So I looked up and I saw the police running by my bedroom window and yelling, 'stop, stop, stop,'" says JD who witnessed the incident.

It unfolded behind her basement apartment.

"When I saw the guns I ran right back in the house," she says.

JD says she never saw the suspect, but says the shot fired was deafening.

Neither officer was hit, but the suspect fled on foot.

"I said to the officer, 'are you okay?' He came back into my yard. He said, 'he shot at me,'" JD said.

Law enforcement searched the neighborhood for nearly two hours.

"They were out there with the K9 and a police officer was there with a gun," said witness Bob Warner. "It was scary, it really was. They told us to get back it the house."

Police recovered the weapon but have not found the suspect. They believe the suspect is no longer in the area.
