Bombing Survivor Donates Marathon Bibs To Help Victims Of Paris Attacks

BOSTON (CBS) - One Boston Marathon bombing survivor has donated his marathon bibs in an effort to help the victims of the Paris terrorist attacks.

Tony Wrubel suffered a serious concussion and hearing damage when the bombs went off on Boylston Street on April 15, 2013. A year later, he decided to run the marathon in order to heal from the experience.

"It for me, it just helped me psychologically, helped me take that day back for myself instead of having someone take it away from me," Wrubel said.

This year, Wrubel is donating his two marathon bibs he received from the One Fund to two French marathoners he met through the French Consulate. Philippe Lopes-Fernandes and Laurent Meunier will run to raise money for GiveForFranceproject, a French-American initiative which aims to heal the victims of the November, 2015 attack which killed more than 100 people.

"It's about showing that together we can fight terrorism," Lopes-Fernandes said.

The men both live in the Boston area and were here during the marathon bombings. They say both the attacks here and in Paris hit close to home.

"It was a really strange and frightening experience and the feeling that, you know, I was there just a few hours before," Meunier said. He was on a flight back to Boston from Paris when he learned about the Paris attacks.

Wrubel hopes that his bibs will not only raise money for the Paris victims but also help them heal, emotionally. He says international support helped him heal after he was injured.

"It was so overwhelming but that level of support really helped a lot of us carry through, emotionally. And, I wanted to give back and do the same thing for the people in Paris," Wrubel said.
