Fairhaven Break-In Thwarted After Homeowner Sees Suspects On Live Video

FAIRHAVEN (CBS) – Forty-five minutes into his workday, and Damien Girard saw burglars enter his home on home video feed.

"It was surreal," said Girard.

The sound of breaking glass activated his NEST Dropcam sending him alert. At first he didn't believe what he saw.

"Within a couple seconds, I realized it wasn't my son because he's not a scumbag and the person in the shot is absolutely a scumbag," said Girard. "An individual in my living room trying to coax my dog over and I called 911 as I ran out the door."

The burglar, who broke in the back of the house, then let his buddy in the front door. Within eight-and-a-half minutes of Girard receiving the alert, the video shows Fairhaven and State Police running into the home.

"It's such a good thing to see the cops all rushed in," said Girard.

Police arrested one of the men upstairs. They said the other jumped from the second story window, and they arrested him after a brief foot chase.

As officers lead one man from the house, an officer can be heard on the surveillance saying, "You broke into a house." The suspect replies, "I didn't break into anything."

Girard was robbed several years ago. This time he made sure the bad guys did not steal his family's feeling of security.

"The last time they got away with it and it's sat with me with me ever since. This time knowing that they didn't, it's really, it's not a good feeling but it feels better than last time," said Girard.

Brian Chandanais, 28, and Jay Burtch, 29, both of Acushnet face numerous charges,

Chandanais was arrested in the house. He was charged with breaking and entering in the daytime to commit a felony, vandalism, larceny from a building, possession of burglarious instruments and resisting arrest.

Burtch jumped out a second floor window and led officers on a foot chase through the neighborhood.
