Heyman: Sandoval Situation 'Could Get Messy' For Red Sox

BOSTON (CBS) -- After he learned that Travis Shaw would be the Red Sox' Opening Day starter at third base, Pablo Sandoval said all the right things to reporters in Fort Myers, Florida on Thursday.

But behind closed doors? That's a much different story.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network joined Zolak & Bertrand on 98.5 The Sports Hub on Friday afternoon, and said Sandoval's benching could become a messy situation between the player and the team. He and his agent, Rick Thurman, met with the Boston brass in Montreal (where the team is concluding their spring schedule this weekend), and neither sound very pleased with the move.

"I got a statement from Thurman and he said, 'If you want to win, why leave the Ferrari in the garage?'" said Heyman. "I would take that quote as he's unhappy, and I would assume that means he would not be that disappointed if he's traded. I don't believe he's demanding a trade at this point, but he's shocked by this development.

"It certainly has the potential to get messy," Heyman added.

Heyman has heard that the San Diego Padres have, at least internally, discussed the possibility of trading for Sandoval, as they were among the teams interested in signing him last winter before he inked a five-year, $95 million deal with Boston. There were rumors earlier this week that the two teams could work out a swap involving Sandoval and starter James Shields, but Sandoval's poor season in Boston and his benching this spring have drastically hurt his value, and Heyman believes the Red Sox would have to toss in a prospect and some money to complete such a trade.
