Keller @ Large: Trump Is Bringing Himself Down

BOSTON (CBS) - I watched nearly three hours of Donald Trump in action Tuesday, in a press conference with Wisconsin media, at his first rally in eight days, and in an hour-long CNN interview.

And it dawned on me why no other candidate has been able to undermine Trump so far, although his margin is looking smaller right now than it has in months.

There's only one person who can bring Trump down – himself.

And he was busy doing just that Tuesday.

When the local press asked him about Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker endorsing Ted Cruz, Trump talked about the economic pain of the people of Wisconsin under Walker, an area where his critique of U.S. trade policies and illegal immigration has resonated with voters.

But in front of voters a few minutes later, he admitted: "I never would have never said this, but [Walker's] fair game because he endorsed Cruz."

All day long there was far more whining from Trump about how unfairly he's been treated by the party, by the press and so on than there was bemoaning the plight of beleaguered voters.

And in a telling moment during his afternoon rally, Trump said of his campaign: "It's a movement and we're part of a movement. It's not me, I'm a messenger."

But what is the message he's sending these days? Since the debates stopped, it's all silly tweets and tit-for-tat mudslinging.

At a time when he should be closing the deal, Trump has stopped making news with his ideas and composure, leaving a vacuum his enemies are happy to fill.

Maybe it's time for a quick side trip back to art-of-the-deal school.
