Roxbury Stop & Shop Shut Down For Health Concerns

BOSTON (CBS) - A popular Stop & Shop has been forced to shut down operations after city inspectors declared to store "unsanitary."

A tip led Boston Inspectional Services to the grocery store on Blue Hill Ave. in Roxbury late last week.

Inspectors found evidence of rodent infestation and rodent droppings in the bakery, produce, and meat sections.

Inspectors first caught the violations Friday, showed them to a store manager, and when they returned three days later, found nothing had been cleaned over the holiday weekend.

Stop & Shop says the evidence of mice may be due to nearby construction.

"Regardless of the reasons, the conditions at this Stop & Shop store location are our responsibility," a company spokesperson said.

"We are cooperating with the Department and are making every possible effort to address the conditions and bring the store into compliance with our own high standards as quickly as possible."

Inspectional Services says the store can reopen once the mess is cleaned up.

In the meantime, customers are directed to the Dorchester location, a major inconvenience for many in the neighborhood who rely on public transportation.

"It's unfortunate because a lot of people in this community, this is our grocery store and so to have get in a cab and pay $10 to go farther is you know kind of unacceptable," one customer said.
