David Murphy Released By Red Sox

BOSTON (CBS) -- The second go-round for David Murphy in a Red Sox uniform ended unceremoniously on Monday, when the team officially released the veteran outfielder.

Murphy, 34, batted .265 this spring as a non-roster invitee.

Murphy opted out of his minor league contract over the weekend, thereby forcing the Red Sox to make a decision.

"There are no hard feelings either way," Murphy told the Boston Herald over the weekend. "It's the business side of baseball. Things might work out, they might not. It's not like I came in here 100 percent thinking I was going to make this team. I was thankful for the opportunity but I think as a veteran player it's nice to have that luxury to try to opt out a little bit sooner to give myself the biggest window until opening day to try to find a job if it's not going to be here."

Murphy batted .283 with 18 doubles, 10 homers and 50 RBIs last season between the Indians and Angels. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2003 draft, and he was dealt to Texas in 2007 as part of the Eric Gagne trade.
