Mother Of 3-Week-Old Boy Hurt In Dorchester Rollover Crash To Face OUI Charges
BOSTON (CBS) -- The mother of a three-week-old boy injured in a rollover crash in Dorchester Center Saturday night will be charged on Monday, police said.
The 28-year-old woman, who has not yet been identified as she hasn't been officially charged, will be charged with negligent operation, operating under the influence, and having an open container in a passenger area.
First responders were called to the accident scene in the Vinson and Marlowe streets area around 8:45 p.m. Witnesses say a car hit a parked van and flipped over.
Witness Sanjay Rehka told WBZ-TV he heard a loud crash and the baby was screaming. He rushed out of her home to help.
"When we got her out, she was conscious, but she was saying 'calm down, calm down,' which kind of confused me because it was just kind of weird, telling us to calm down when she was just in a crash," Rekha said, adding that woman seemed disoriented.
The infant was inside the car, and he was rushed to Boston Medical Center. There is no word yet on the boy's condition.
The woman was taken to Boston Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries after the crash.
Police later said the woman was driving with a half-full bottle of Heineken beer when the car flipped and rolled over.
In a statement released early Sunday evening, a Department of Children and Families spokeswoman said, "The Department received a report on this situation and, as we investigate in collaboration with law enforcement, custody of the child has been transferred to DCF."
The crash continues to be investigated by police.
