Taxi Drivers Targeted By Armed Robbers In Worcester

WORCESTER (CBS) - A livery driver is the latest victim in an uptick of armed robberies aimed at taxi, livery, and delivery drivers, Worcester Police say.

At about 1:20 a.m. Friday morning, police found the driver in the parking lot area of 136 Country Club Boulevard suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The driver was transferred to the hospital and is listed in stable condition.

Police say the driver picked up two men on Acton Street and was asked to drive them to the back of a housing complex called Lincoln Village. When the car stopped, one of the men got out, pointed a handgun at the driver, and demanded money. During the incident, the man began shooting at the driver as the driver accelerated.

The two men fled the scene. Police are now looking for the men described as Hispanic and in their twenties. One suspect is described as 5'5" with short, dark hair. The other is described as 5'10" with long dark hair.

Worcester Police have reported eight similar incidents this year including the shooting of a cab driver, the stabbing of a livery driver, and the armed robbery of a pizza delivery driver.

The owner of Worcester livery company, Spanish Cab, Jose Claros, says he feels livery drivers are being targeted. "You just worry about the safety of the drivers. I mean, most of them they have families and kids," Claros said.

Police have not said whether any of the incidents are related.

"They could be. We're just not sure. We're not there yet at this part of the investigation," Sergeant Kerry Hazelhurst said.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Worcester police.
