Keller @ Large: Polls Show Trump May Be Stuck In A Rut

BOSTON (CBS) - If you don't see Donald Trump on the news this morning bragging about his latest poll numbers, there's a good reason for that.

Two new polls from Fox News and Bloomberg find that in a hypothetical matchup with Hillary Clinton, she easily beats Trump in both surveys. He is the weakest of the three Remaining republicans against her.

And Trump's unfavorable ratings, a chronic problem for him, are closing in on 70-percent. If that's for real, it makes him borderline unelectable.

What is going on?

It's just a guess, but several factors could be at work here.

First, full frontal criticism of Trump's credentials and character has been a fairly new development in this race, especially from other candidates and well-known Republican figures. The recent piling on has given wider exposure to and reinforcement of the claim that Trump, while entertaining, is not really presidential material.

The next batch of polling may show Trump getting a boost from the Brussels terror attack, as he did last fall after Paris and San Bernardino. Or it may show that Trump's pattern, virtually unchanged for months, is wearing a bit thin with voters who've heard it all now several times.

And I wonder if the Trump campaign is making a big mistake by refusing any more debates, a venue where he has done very well by any measure. By giving up that platform he gave up a measure of control over the campaign narrative.

Polls are just snapshots. But if I were advising Trump, I'd urge him to start asking - what's wrong with these pictures?
