Starbucks To Donate 100% Of Unsold Food To People In Need

SEATTLE (CBS) – The breakfast sandwiches, bakery items and yogurt parfaits left on Starbucks' shelves at the end of the day will soon all be going to a good cause.

The coffee chain has announced that in the next five years, it plans to donate 100 percent of its salvageable, unsold food to those who need it most.

Starbucks has already been donating the pastries it doesn't sell. Now, it will be working to include perishable items in the donations.

"The challenge was finding a way to preserve the food's quality during delivery," Starbucks brand manager Jane Maly said. "We focused on maintaining the temperature, texture and flavor of the surplus food, so when it reached a person in need, they could safely enjoy it."

Starbucks has partnered with Feeding America, a "food-rescue" nonprofit, and will have refrigerated vans pick up food from each Starbuck stores to deliver to hungry individuals and families.

The company says it hopes the donation program will make a difference and feed people who might otherwise not been able to afford some of the items at Starbucks.
