Patriots Open New League Year With Minor Moves

BOSTON (CBS) – As is often the case, the Patriots have been quiet early on as NFL free agency is officially underway.

While a slew of signings taking place before and after the start new league year at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, New England hasn't reshaped its roster as of yet.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss reports that the only Patriots signing to date is linebacker Ramon Humber, who previously played for the New Orleans Saints. Reiss describes Humber as a special team player and depth piece to the linebacker corps.

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reported Wednesday afternoon that Patriots linebacker Dane Fletcher has opted to retire and open a gym in Montana.

Defensive back Tavon Wilson's time in New England is officially up. He tweeted his appreciation to the Patriots organization.

Wilson then followed up that he will be joining the Detroit Lions, reuniting with new Detroit General Manager Bob Quinn, who was previously a member of the Patriots organization.

Other AFC East teams have had eventful starts to free agency.

Former Bears running back Matt Forte reportedly agreed to join the New York Jets, while the Miami Dolphins have lost running back Lamar Miller to the Houston Texans.

Super Bowl champion Denver's plan to replace Peyton Manning didn't go as smoothly as planned.

According to reports, quarterback Brock Osweiler has agreed in principle to sign with Houston, leaving the Broncos without a starting quarterback.

The Patriots do not have a long list of key free agents they may be losing.

New England was said to be interested in Bengals wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. But he is reportedly on the way to Atlanta to sign a contract with the Falcons worth $7 million per season.

LeGarrette Blount, Akiem Hicks, Sealver Siliga and Nate Ebner are among the team's free agents.
