Johnny Damon Tells Newspaper He's Endorsing Donald Trump For President

NEW YORK (CBS) – Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has picked up another athlete's endorsement – this time from a former Red Sox star.

Ex-Sox outfielder Johnny Damon tells The New York Daily News that he's on the Trump train this election year.

"I want (Trump) for president," Damon, 42, told The Daily News Wednesday. "I'm a Trump fan ever since I met him seven or eight years ago. Everything he does, he does first-class — his hotels, his businesses, his golf courses. The issues all the other politicians failed to discuss, (Trump) is bringing us up to speed."

Damon isn't the only New England sports personality to come out as a Trump fan. Clay Buchholz says he's supporting The Donald, who introduced him to his wife. Tom Brady has called Trump a friend, and Bill Belichick recently joined the businessman for dinner.

Damon, a former "Celebrity Apprentice" contestant, says he'll be wherever Trump needs him to campaign. He also defended Trump's controversial position on illegal immigration.

"Everyone is calling him a racist," Damon told the newspaper. "He just wants people to come into this country legally and fill out the proper paperwork. That's how I'm viewing it."
