Red Sox Sign Outfielder David Murphy To Minor-League Deal

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox and veteran outfielder David Murphy have agreed on a minor league contract, according to a report by Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. The 34-year-old Murphy started his career with the Red Sox and has also played for the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and Los Angeles Angels.

According to the report, Murphy will receive a base salary of $2 million if he makes the Red Sox's major league roster. That is no guarantee, with the Red Sox already having a deep outfield led by Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Rusney Castillo. He will likely compete with Chris Young for the fourth outfielder spot, and if he starts the season in the minor leagues he would be a serviceable backup outfielder in the case of an injury.

Murphy has batted .274 with 104 home runs and 472 RBI in 1,110 major league games. Red Sox fans will recognize his name from 2007 when the Red Sox traded Murphy to the Rangers as part of a package for closer Eric Gagne.
