Worcester Baker's Bernie Sanders Birthday Cake Goes Viral

WORCESTER (CBS) -- Nicole Messier runs a business out of her home called Butter Box Bakery. The Worcester mother baked a special cake for her son's 18th birthday on Sunday--and now, that cake's getting a lot of attention online.

"He wanted a Bernie Sanders cake, he's an avid supporter of Bernie Sanders," said Messier.

Her son loved the cake, and after he posted a photo of it on a Bernie Sanders supporter website, it started to go viral--Messier said it now has nearly 7,000 likes.

And that's when the trolls arrived. Even though Messier said the cake was just a cake and not a political statement, things became nasty out in social media land.

"People from Ohio were posting things like, you know, I had cockroaches in my cupcakes," said Messier.

But she also got a message from someone all the way out in California, asking if she delivers. Unfortunately, she has to say no.

"I've never had more than, like, 100 likes on anything," said Messier. "And now I'm up to nearly 7,000 likes on a photo that I did--and that's amazing."
