Lawrence House Fire Leaves Over A Dozen Residents Out In Record Cold

LAWRENCE (CBS) -- A frigid February fire breaks out in Lawrence, leaving more than a dozen residents out in the cold.

Fire officials say the blaze broke out Saturday morning on the third floor of a multi-family home Butler Street.

Fortunately everyone made it out safely with no injuries.

"We encountered heavy fire on the third floor. Unfortunately this is a cut up building and it really hampered our operations in the cold," Fire Chief Brian Moriarty said.

Betzaida Santiago who lives on the 3rd floor says she was on her way home and when she saw the flames and smoke billowing from her house.

"It's really bad all we have was in there. We have nothing. No food, no clothes, and now no home," Santiago said.

Firefighters not only had to battle the blaze but also frigid temperatures.

"It's  cold  and I am worried about the slip and falls and putting ladders in the ice," Chief Moriarty said.

Most of the fire was contained to the third floor.  The Red Cross is assisting the residents. The fire remains under investigation.
