Gov. Baker Seeks $250M For Local Transportation Projects
BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Charlie Baker's administration is asking lawmakers to authorize $250 million for local transportation projects, including $50 million for upgrades on small bridges.
The Republican governor on Friday also filed a separate $170 million spending bill that includes funds for emergency homeless shelter programs and legal services for low-income people.
Baker is seeking $200 million in state borrowing for what is known as Chapter 90. The funds are used to reimburse city and towns for transportation improvements.
Officials said spans between 10 and 20 feet in length would be eligible for the small bridge funds.
Baker says the $170 million spending bill would cover shortfalls in the state budget for the fiscal year ending July 1. The governor last month ordered about $50 million in spending cuts to other programs.
