Thieves Target BU Students' $1,000 Canada Goose Jackets

BOSTON (CBS) – An expensive brand of jacket has become a popular target for theft this winter, Boston University is warning students.

The school's police department says they've gotten 14 reports of clothing thefts since September, and most of those involve stolen Canada Goose jackets.

"Known for their round arm patches and fur hoods, the coats are sold for upwards of $900 at upscale department stores and can run as high as $1,300," Boston University says. "Their popular appeal and expensive sticker price explain why they're a favorite among thieves."

Police say the majority of thefts are happening in the school's gym, where students leave the coats on racks or the locker room. That leads investigators to believe that the thieves are either B.U. students or paying members of the gym.

Students are being encouraged to lock up their belongings.

"A Canada Goose jacket is probably twice as valuable as an iPhone," BUPD detective lieutenant Peter DiDomenica said in a statement. "But many people who own them aren't considering them to be valuable property."
