Suspects Identified In Lowell Home Invasion

LOWELL (CBS) -- The suspects in a Saturday night armed home invasion in Lowell--one of whom was shot and wounded by a responding officer--were identified Sunday afternoon.

Lowell Police charged Christopher Covey, 46, of Groveland, and Timothy Berry, 48, of Haverhill with armed home invasion. Berry was also charged with assault by means of a dangerous weapon to wit handgun. Police said both had lengthy criminal records.

Police responded to a call of an armed home invasion at a Pine Hill Street house around 8:17 p.m. Berry is currently under police guard and being treated at a Boston hospital for gunshot wounds he sustained after allegedly pointing a gun at the first officer to arrive on scene.

Covey allegedly ran out the back of the home and was arrested a few blocks away. Police said he was injured during the arrest and taken to Lowell General Hospital Saturday night.

They recovered a loaded semi-automatic handgun they say Berry pointed at the officer. They also found fake badges and handcuffs at the scene, and said the two may have been impersonating police officers when they entered the home.

The officer who shot Berry was not injured. Lowell police said that, as is standard procedure, he has been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation into the incident.

Two people inside the home were allegedly assaulted by the suspects. They were taken to the hospital after suffering non-life-threatening injuries.

Massachusetts State Police and Lowell Police executed a search warrant on the Pine Hill Street home, and found a large amount of cash and marijuana. They believe the victims of the incident were specifically targeted.

Berry's condition was not yet known, but he was conscious and alert when he was treated at the scene Saturday night, and was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.
