Keller @ Large: A Closer Look At The Undecided Voter
BOSTON (CBS) - What's that?
You say you're a New Hampshire voter who really hasn't made up your mind yet? With just four days left before primary day?
According to the exclusive WBZ/UMass Amherst poll, there are quite a few of you up for grabs, a situation that has the presidential campaigns in a frenzy.
Now, be honest, this is me you're talking to – you wouldn't be just saying you're undecided because you don't want anyone to know who you're for, would you?
OK, I believe it, you just can't make up your mind. And that suggests to me you fall into one of three categories:
1) You've been following the campaign closely, and every last one of them has found a way to turn you off. Shallowness, hypocrisy, bombast, extremism, dullness, excessive pandering, perhaps a combination. Whatever the reason, you aren't digging it at all, and if it snows next Tuesday, you might just skip it altogether.
2) You've been following the campaign closely, and you find several of the candidates appealing, but just can't narrow it down to one. You're watching the final debates closely for a sign, and maybe you'll just close your eyes and point in the booth. Or maybe you'll skip it too.
3) You haven't been following the campaign. You've been assaulted by screaming speeches, intrusive phone calls and unwanted mail. And you just want it to be over, to the point where you might take a pass as well.
If I'm right, maybe the remaining truly undecided voters in New Hampshire won't matter after all.
And wouldn't that be a kick in the pants to the politico-industrial complex.
