Bobcat Season? N.H. Hunting Proposal Draws Heated Debate

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A packed hearing on a proposal to have a bobcat hunting and trapping season in New Hampshire drew much opposition and some support.

The Fish and Game Commission proposes issuing 50 bobcat permits through a lottery. The timing of the draft season would be December for trapping January for hunting.

Opponents at Monday's hearing in Concord said it's inhumane. Supporters said there are enough bobcats to support a limited hunt. Neighboring states have bobcat seasons.

When asked at a Nashua town hall meeting about the bobcats, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said "Honestly, I have no damn idea." He jokingly complained that after starting his day at 5 a.m. in Iowa, he'd now have to go back to his hotel room and research the issue on the Internet.

Another hearing is scheduled Tuesday in Lancaster.
