Bruins' Netminder Jonas Gustavsson Hospitalized Due To Elevated Heart Rate

BOSTON (CBS) -- Jonas Gustavsson got the start in net for the Bruins on Tuesday night against the Anaheim Ducks, but he did not finish the 6-2 Boston loss.

Gustavsson had to leave Tuesday's contest after the first period and was taken to Mass. General Hospital. The Bruins said Gustavsson was hospitalized for precautionary reasons due to an elevated heart rate.

"He was taken to Mass General Hospital and remained there overnight for testing," the Bruins said in a statement Wednesday night. "All preliminary tests came back negative and he was discharged Wednesday afternoon. Jonas is expected to rejoin the team after the NHL All-Star Break pending clearance from the Bruins medical staff."

Gustavsson has had heart issues in the past, undergoing at least three surgeries to treat a condition that causes an abnormal rhythm. He was diagnosed with the issue while a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization during the 2009-10 season, and was pulled from an AHL game with an elevated heartbeat in 2011.

Immediately after the game Tuesday night, Coach Claude Julien said he had no idea why Gustavsson was taken to the hospital.

"I have no idea. To be honest with you, I have no idea," Julien said following the loss. "He was brought to whatever hospital or whatever, I was told. I'm in the middle of a game here, so that's all I was told."

Gustavsson allowed a pair of goals on 16 shots faced in the game's first frame. He was replaced by Tuukka Rask, who allowed three goals on 22 shots by the Ducks.
