Mic'd Up Julian Edelman Before Drop Vs. Chiefs: 'Can't Catch Right Now'

BOSTON (CBS) -- Julian Edelman turned in an outstanding performance last Saturday against the Chiefs, but in his first game coming back from a broken foot, his day started with a handful of drops.

After the game -- a 27-20 Patriots win over the Chiefs -- Edelman admitted that the drops were due to him trying to make a move and gain extra yardage before completing the catch.

"That was just me trying to be too fast," he said.

But it turns out Edelman was very much aware of his drops issue in the moment, and he even made a comment about them seconds before what could have been his most costly mistake.

Edelman was mic'd up during the game for NFL Films, and on Sound F/X, Edelman said out loud -- either to himself or to cornerback Sean Smith -- that he simply couldn't catch the football.

"Can't catch right now," Edelman said. "Can't catch."

Edelman then faked to the inside before running toward the sideline and gaining separation from Smith, with Tom Brady delivering a pass directly into Edelman's stomach. Yet Edelman bobbled it, and on his second effort to catch it, he ended up knocking it right into Smith.

Fortunately for the Patriots, Smith couldn't come up with the interception, which would have given Kansas City a short field in a 7-3 game.

The always-fiery Brady didn't yell at his favorite receiver on the bench, though. Instead, the quarterback used a pet name while offering some encouragement.

"Hey, you're trying to run with it, bubs," Brady told Edelman. "Catch it, get down."
