Mayor Walsh Previews State Of The City Address: 'A Year Of Action'

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Mayor of Boston is like a conductor of an urban symphony--and on Tuesday night, Boston's elected conductor will be on the stage at Symphony Hall for the annual State of the City Address.

Mayor Marty Walsh said his speech, which will set the tone and agenda for the next year, will focus on education, housing issues, public safety, and economic development--and that 2016 will be "a year of action."

And as he heads into his third year, Mayor Walsh said he's learned a lot, but that there are still many things to accomplish for the good of the city.

"Last year's speech was kind of a vision," said Walsh. "We actually sat down and looked at last year's speech, and realized that a lot of what we've spoken about, we've accomplished. So, it's a time of action now."

On education, Walsh hearkened back to his November 2013 victory speech, during which he told supporters he sought to make Boston a place where dreams came true for children all over the city.

"I just think it's important that we come together as a community, all people, instead of getting caught up in the battles between charters and district schools," said Walsh. "The kids deserve us to be working together collectively moving forward to make sure that we deliver the best education to them, to put them in the best position for success."

The State of the City Address will begin at 7 p.m. You can stream it live on CBS Boston.
