Community Helps Phillipston Police Officer Who Lost Home, Pet In Fire

ROYALSTON (CBS) - A Phillipston police officer is finding out how much he means to his community.

Canine Officer Bill Chapman's bloodhounds have lots of new scents surrounding them - donated toys, clothes and blankets.

"We're usually out helping others," said Chapman.

The donated items came in, in less than a day. They are for Chapman, his wife and two you kids. Wednesday, his chief called him at an out-of-state canine training seminar to rush home to Royalston.

Firefighters were called to Chapman's home for the first time around 11:30 A.M. Wednesday (they were back Thursday night putting out hot spots). No one was home at the time. His father, who is also his neighbor, saw fire and called 911.

The house was destroyed. Chapman's father was able to save Tessie, Chapman's working Bloodhound, from the outdoor kennel. Chapman's 9-year old son's dog did not make it.

"They are surprisingly doing pretty well. The kids are really strong, my wife is good that way," said Chapman.

They are also doing well thanks to the people of Royalston, Phillipston, and small neighboring towns.

"It's nice," Chapman said. "Community, people pull together out here."

Chapman is known for his bloodhounds, but he grew-up in the area. He is one of two Phillipston police officers, and works part time for the Royalston Police Department.

"It's kind of a fair and balanced approach to everyone." said Chapman.

People have appreciated that approach hundreds of times over. A resident started a GoFundMe page and the dollars keep growing.

Thursday evening the amount raised was more than $34,000 - a number that was overwhelming to Chapman.

For an officer used to helping others, thank you does not do his appreciation justice.
