Matthew Slater Offers Support For Chandler Jones

BOSTON (CBS) -- While some details have emerged, it's still unclear exactly what went on with Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones on Sunday morning. So it should come as no surprise that his teammates are not talking about the matter as they prepare for this weekend's playoff game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Jones was rushed to the hospital with a medical emergency early Sunday morning after he showed up at the Foxboro police station seeking assistance. Several of his teammates were asked about the matter on Wednesday, but didn't have much to say.

Special teams captain Matthew Slater didn't feel comfortable discussing Jones' situation, but told 98.5 The Sports Hub's Zolak & Bertrand that the New England locker room supports their teammate.

"I'll say this and I think everyone feels this way, we support our teammates no matter what's going on," said Slater. "We support Chandler and the other 50 or 60 guys in this locker room. That's all I'll say about that. I don't have the right to comment on it so we'll leave it on that."

Slater later told reporters in the locker room that they will do their best not to let the situation become a distraction leading up to this weekend's Divisional Round game against the Chiefs.

"I think we just try to go about our jobs and routines as best we can and put the focus on football. But as I said, obviously, guys go through different things. We support them if they need us and that's not different in this case," said Slater. "We have to hold one another accountable and understand how hard we've worked to get in this position and the price that we've paid. We don't want to take this opportunity for granted."

Teammates Sebastian Vollmer, Malcolm Butler and Josh Kline were all asked about the situation and declined to comment.

Jones did not speak with the media on Wednesday, but was out on the field for New England's practice session. He practiced on Monday and Tuesday, with word of his weekend hospital trip breaking early Tuesday evening.
