Keller @ Large: Michelle Wu Talks Diversity In Politics

BOSTON (CBS) -- Newly-elected Boston City Council President Michelle Wu is the first Asian-American woman to serve on the city council, though she said she never pictured herself as an elected official when she was younger.

"When I was growing up, I never imagined running for office, and I think a big part of that was not seeing anyone who looked like me in government," said Wu. "I was told all the time to consider figure skating, because Michelle Kwan was such a popular and nationally-known figure and Asian-American woman."

Wu sat down with WBZ political analyst Jon Keller to discuss her new term, the issues facing the city, and diversity in politics.

"I hope that the younger generation does look around--the younger generation from every background--seeing a diverse representation in our government today, and can envision themselves stepping up."

She said that, though she's originally from Chicago, she loves Boston.

"I love that Bostonians are so fiercely proud of the city," said Wu. "And that pride is very, very local. Every single neighborhood, every block, you can see the markers of history, you can see people attached to what came before them. And I think that is fundamental to Boston politics."

Wu and Keller also spoke about economic development and working with Mayor Walsh.
