Fast Food Face-Off: Burger King Takes On McDonald's Combo Deal

NEW YORK (CBS) -- Two giants of fast food are going head-to-head to target hungry customers looking to save a buck.

McDonald's is rolling out its McPick 2 deal this week for a limited run through Feb. 8. Diners can choose two items for $2 from a menu of small fries, mozzarella sticks, a McDouble and McChicken.

Meanwhile, Burger King has just introduced its own "5 for 4" offer. That deal will get customers a bacon cheeseburger, four-piece chicken nugget, small fries, a cookie and a small drink for $4.

CBS News financial contributor Mellody Hobson says fast food restaurants are trying to replace the dollar menus that were losing chains money.

"They are trying to drive customers into the door. . . while at the same time weaning customers off the unprofitable dollar menus that took root during the financial crisis," Hobson told CBS This Morning.

The cheap combo trend has also been seen at Wendy's with its new "4 for $4" deal and similar offers at Pizza Hut and Papa John's.
