Crash Leaves Wires On Road, Shuts Down Route 1 In Peabody

PEABODY (CBS) – It was a race to get busy Route 1 back up and running before the evening rush hour in Peabody, and it worked. A MassDOT crew was able to re-open the road just in time, with one southbound lane blocked off where a utility crew worked to restore power.

At about 11:30 a.m., police say a female driver cut-off another driver, as she suddenly pulled into Turnpike Car Wash in Peabody.

The other driver was forced into a pole, that split in half from the force of the crash. Car wash owner Bob Katseff ran out when he heard the noise.

"When I noticed a person in the car, even though there was a transformer on the car, the door was open. I didn't want to touch the car." He managed to reach in and grab the woman. "She was screaming. I held her hands and got her out of the car. She was able to move," he said.

Police said there were no major injuries.

State Police shut down both north and southbound sides of Route 1 for most of the day, causing major traffic tie-ups. Peabody Municipal Light reported about ten businesses and homes lost power, but were expected to be back up and running Monday night.
