Boston Globe Editors, Reporters To Deliver Newspapers After Delivery Problems

BOSTON (CBS) -- Boston Globe editors and reporters will be helping deliver newspapers early Sunday morning following delivery problems.

Matt Viser, a White House and national politics reporter for the Globe, tweeted "After major issues with new home delivery vendor, dozens of frustrated @BostonGlobe reporters & editors are pitching in to deliver Sun paper."

Farah Stockman added "Yes it has come to this. #BostonGlobe journalists r getting up at 4 am to do what a company evidently can't: deliver the paper."

In a statement released by Elevate Communications Saturday night, it reads: "According to the Globe, more than 100 Boston Globe business operations and newsroom staffers and other associates are volunteering to help deliver the Sunday Globe tomorrow."

"Additionally, more than 100 Globe business operation staffers have been fielding calls as volunteers in the call center over the past few days," the statement adds.

Globe reporter Maria Cramer is joining her colleagues to deliver the paper.

"At around midnight a lot of us are going to be showing up at Newton...coffee in hand," she told WBZ-TV's Jim Smith. "We'll be picking up as many papers as we need to take in our car, and drive up to readers' homes and put them on their doorstep.

"This is something that the reporters actually raised their hands to do...nobody asked to do this. We wanted to do it."

It all started Monday when the Globe switched to a new delivery company. However, there were major issues, as some readers were getting their papers later or not at all.

The Globe is working to fix the problems, but in the meantime many reporters will be literally delivering their stories to their readers.

"Well, I think everyone wants the same thing," says Cramer. "Let's just get these papers to our readers and lets just resolve this as quickly as possible...so we can go back to writing the news and not delivering, and readers can open up their doors and find the paper waiting for them."

On the Globe's website, they released a statement for their subscribers.

"As many of you know, this week we are transitioning to a new home delivery partner, which is causing disruption to our delivery service," reads the statement. We have added extra staff to our call center and are working around the clock to improve our responsiveness.

"If you are having problems with delivery, please visit our customer service website, BostonGlobe.com/ConsumerUpdate. Scroll down on the page to report a delivery issue and get detailed instructions for accessing your account. Of course, we will offer full refunds to those subscribers who do not receive newspapers."

WBZ-TV's Jim Smith contributed to this report.
