Somerville Carriage House Roof Collapses

SOMERVILLE (CBS) -- The roof of a carriage house featured on Somerville's historical registry collapsed Thursday.

The building on Tufts Street was in the process of being rehabbed. Three workers were inside at the time, though nobody was hurt.

The wide roof of the carriage house completely collapsed. Deputy Fire Chief Christopher Major said he was most worried about the fragile walls of the carriage house that are still standing.

"The main issue we have right now is a secondary collapse, because there are still two exterior walls that are up, and one of them is very close to a three-decker on the rear section of the building," Major said.

The triple-decker house that is also part of the property has already been rehabbed, and is still in good shape.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, and it was not yet clear what would happen to the historic building.
