NightSide - Protection Of Rights Vs. Religious Freedom

BOSTON (CBS) - We are currently seeing a struggle play out on the national stage between respecting individual rights and the protection of religious freedom. After six months of refusing to pay, owners of an Oregon bakery have finally forked over state-ordered fines of more than $135,000 for refusing to make a cake for a lesbian couple's wedding. The owners claim that being forced to bake the cake violates their religious beliefs, but Oregon has had an anti-discrimination law on the books since 2007 that prevents businesses from discriminating against customers based on sexual orientation. Meanwhile in New York City, employers can now be fined $250,000 for "failing to use an individual's preferred name or pronoun." Is the government overreaching with these types of rules and regulations? Or is it necessary to make sure nobody suffers from discrimination or prejudice?
