Walpole Woman Celebrates 110th Birthday

WALPOLE (CBS) – Alice Fischer, who is believed to be the oldest living resident of Massachusetts, turned 110 Wednesday. She was born in New Hampshire, but spent most of her adult life in Fall River.

These days she's a resident at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation home in Walpole where she was treated to a birthday party surrounded by her great and great, great grandchildren and many friends.

Fischer worked as a bookkeeper until she was 85 and lived on her own until just a few years ago.

What does she think about turning 110?

"I worked so hard, I didn't even notice it," she said in an interview with WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

She was active in her church and in town and raised a son with her husband Paul.

She says they loved to travel and they had a good life at home. "We had the farm; we grew peaches and apples, strawberries. I loved it."

But there were hard times.

"We lived through hard days but we didn't mind it so much because everybody shared," she said.

Fischer has welcomed two great, great granddaughters in the past year. What words of wisdom does she have for them?

"Work hard; enjoy yourself and your life."

Alice Fischer, 110 and still going strong.
