Mayor Walsh, Gov. Baker Ring Bells For Salvation Army

BOSTON (CBS) -- A political dynamic duo joined forces for a good cause in downtown Boston Wednesday.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh rang the bell for the Salvation Army in front of Macy's around noon--but it was a surprise for those gathered when Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker showed up to help.

"I asked the mayor if there was a chance for me to come by and just wish him a Merry Christmas," said Baker. "And he said, 'well, I'm gonna be down ringing the bell on Wednesday if you wanna come down and do some civic service,' so I said sure."

"And he brought $20, so it was worth it," Walsh joked.

It's the final week of the Salvation Army's red kettle campaign, and the governor and mayor showed up to try to help the organization meet their annual goal.

"It's for a great cause," said Walsh. "When I was a kid, coming downtown, the Salvation Army was always here. The governor has the same story as a kid. It's great to support a great organization."
