Police Arrest Alleged South Boston Mail Package Thieves

BOSTON (CBS) -- Three men were arrested Monday afternoon, accused of stealing packages from residents' porches in South Boston.

Police responded to reports of the thefts around East Fourth and N Streets. A witness told investigators the men were ripping open the boxes and stuffing the items into shopping bags.

Officers who were working a detail in the area found three men who matched the description. According to police, one of the men was carrying a shopping bag filled with items, some of which were tagged with the addresses of local residences.

Police arrested the men, identified as Robert MacNeil, 47, or Dorchester, Johnny Sadm, 19, and Cody Urban, 19, both of South Boston. All three are facing larceny charges.

Mailed package theft increases during the holiday season. Police urge recipients to arrange for packages to be shipped to locations where someone will be available to receive them, or to choose to pick them up at a post office instead of having it delivered to the doorstep.
