United Airlines Bringing Back Free Snacks

CHICAGO (CBS) – Air travel is a lot less glamorous than it used to be, but United Airlines is bringing one perk back – free snacks.

The carrier says it will be offering complimentary treats for flyers starting in February. They were originally taken away in 2008 when the airline merged with Continental.

Passengers on flights that take off before 9:45 a.m. will be offered a stroopwafel, which is a thin, caramel-filled waffle. After that, United will hand out snack mixes including rice crackers, wasabi peas and pretzel sticks.

Free snacks can still be found on a few airlines. JetBlue has continued to offer its signature blue potato chips and other complimentary snacks. Southwest and Delta both have free peanuts and pretzels.

United, which flies to Boston's Logan Airport, says other food items will still be available for purchase, and they're also improving the food and drink service on intentional flights.

"We're refocusing on the big and little things that we know matter to our customers and shape how they feel about their travel experience," said Jimmy Samartzis, United's vice president of food services, in a statement.
