Brewster Man Charged With Assaulting Federal Officer During Parking Argument

BOSTON (CBS) - Video has surfaced showing a Brewster man being tased after a parking violation that got out of control. The incident is part of an ongoing federal criminal case.

In June, Don Savage, 56, says he and his wife were visiting Cape Cod National Seashore. The couple claims they were given permission to park in a spot for which they did not have a permit for ten minutes. After thirty minutes, a federal park ranger came over and demanded to see Savage's photo ID.

Body camera video on the Ranger shows the incident escalating quickly. It takes Savage a few minutes to show his ID. Then, the Ranger demands that he sit on the ground. After Savage refuses to comply, he tackles him to the ground. More than four minutes later, the ranger is seen tasing Savage when he moves his arms.

"When I approach a police officer I'm going to know to be damned afraid and not do anything because what's happening these days is that the average citizen has the responsibility to calm down the arresting police officer." Savage told WBZ.

Savage has been charged with assaulting a federal officer. He says he bit the officer's hand. His case is scheduled for trial in February.

The Superintendent of the Cape Cod National Seashore told WBZ that the case is still under investigation. The U.S. Attorney's office would not comment due to the pending case.
