The weekend vote by leaders of the organization representing more than 25,000 doctors came days after a group announced that it had secured enough signatures to move forward with its pro-marijuana ballot question.

The medical society maintained its longstanding position to legalizing recreational marijuana. But it also added language saying that if a measure is approved, it include dedicated revenues to educate the public about substance abuse and addiction, "which may be aggravated by the use of recreational marijuana."

The physicians' group also approved a resolution calling on doctors to advise women of child-bearing age that use of medical marijuana could pose risks for pregnancy, the fetus and breastfeeding.
