21 Mass. College Presidents Earned Over $500K In 2013

BOSTON (CBS) -- New numbers show 21 college presidents in Massachusetts made more than $500,000 in 2013.

The report by The Chronicle of Higher Education looks at base pay, bonuses and other compensation for school leaders.

Boston University President Robert A. Brown takes the top spot with a total compensation of $1,182,534 in 2013. He was the only college president making more than $1 million a year in the Bay State, and is followed by the presidents of Northeastern, Brandeis, Harvard and MIT.

The only public school president earning over $500,000 in 2013 was former UMass President Robert Caret at $517,343.

The Chronicle of Higher Education looked at 558 executives at private colleges and 238 at public schools. Thirty-two college presidents nationwide made more than $1 million in 2013.

The highest-earning college chief in the nation is Lee C. Bollinger of Columbia University, who made over $4.6 million in 2013.
