Eleven people were taken to the hospital including five investigators. The standoff went on for hours, and then early Friday evening, a breakthrough.

"We did get officers inside of the building at the Planned Parenthood and the officers were able to shout to the suspect and make communication with him, and at that point, they were able to get him to surrender and he was taken into custody," Lt. Catherine Buckley of Colorado Springs Police said.

In Boston, police stepped up patrols in front of the Planned Parenthood clinic on Commonwealth Ave as a precaution.

Jennifer Childs-Roshak, the local organization president, released a statement saying:

"Our top priority is the safety of our patients and staff. The situation in Colorado is tragic, and our hearts go out to everyone involved. Here in Massachusetts and across the country, Planned Parenthood has strong security measures in place, works closely with law enforcement agencies, and has a very strong safety record."
