Beverly Woman Dies Days After Police Say Her Husband Choked Her

BEVERLY, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts woman has died days after police say her estranged husband choked her with the strings of her sweatshirt.

Beverly police say Axel Scherer had gone to the police station Monday and confessed to attacking Edith Black-Scherer in her home.

Investigators say the woman was found with a pillow over her head and strings wrapped around her neck. The independent author died from her injuries Saturday.

Forty-five-year-old Axel Scherer is being held without bail. The Essex County District Attorney's Office says the charges already brought against him will be upgraded to murder.

It's unclear if Scherer has hired an attorney. He's scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
