Phantom Gourmet: Sandwich Master In Rindge, NH

RINDGE, NH - If you want something done right, it's best to leave it to the master. If that something happens to be lunch, it's best to head to Sandwich Master in Rindge, New Hampshire.

Though their official motto boasts "The Best Stuff Between Bread," the Sandwich Master's true specialty is oversized, overstuffed, absolutely outrageous eats. Some of these concoctions may look a little intimidating, made with onion rings, mozzarella sticks and even spaghetti, but customers claim after one bite, you won't be able to pull yourself away.

The man in charge is none other than the Earl of Sandwich himself, owner Earl Marshall. While the space may be small, he makes the magic happen with the help of his own royal family - his mother and his teenage daughters.

It's easy to love Earl and his girls because they treat every customer like an extension of their family. Like a home cooked meal, they hope their sandwiches provide the ultimate comfort, which is why they named their signature dish the Sandwich Master Comfort. The double-decker comes loaded with gooey mac n cheese, pulled pork and barbecue sauce.

There are other sandwiches so crazy the staff feels the need to warn you: like the Sloppy Mac Crazy, a heap of homemade sloppy Joe mix layered between two mac n cheese sandwiches, and the Grilled Cheese Crazy, a mountain of roast beef, lettuce and cheese served between two grilled cheese and bacon sandwiches.

For a sandwich that's both irresistible and ultra-original, try The Godfather, packed with meatballs, steak, sausage, onions, peppers and a homestyle pasta bake; or The Dumpster made with chicken fingers, onion rings and mozzarella sticks and drenched in marinara sauce. Sure, the name may not sound too appealing, but The Dumpster is a customer favorite.

Sandwich Master doesn't just put a unique spin on sandwiches; they also have a Pizza Quesadilla so big, a tortilla can barely contain it. Crammed with sausage, ham, chicken, bacon, hamburger, onion, green peppers, mushroom, pizza sauce, mozzarella and parmesan cheese, this dish comes served on a thick wooden cutting board.

For burger lovers, Earl created the Junkyard Burger stacked with black Angus beef, sloppy Joe mix, onion rings, mozzarella sticks and fried mac n cheese.

Even the sides are full of surprises, from the Meatball Mad Bowl served with crispy fries and melted cheese; to the Shepard's Pie potato skins bursting with fresh ground beef; to the Killer Fries boasting shoestring and waffle fries, melted mozzarella and cheddar cheese, bacon and sliced jalapenos.

Maybe you don't want to settle for a side of fries. Maybe you want to challenge yourself. If that's the case, The Nutcase is about a big a challenge as you can find.

This 5-decker sandwich weighs in at almost 10 pounds, and each layer is separated by a grilled cheese sandwich. Inside, there's macaroni and cheese; stuffing with cranberry sauce; mozzarella sticks, onion rings and chicken fingers; scrambled eggs and hashbrowns; even a burger and fries. So while eating this sandwich requires some serious will-power, you will never be bored of the flavor.

If you do manage to make your way through all five layers, you'll earn yourself a special Sandwich Master T-shirt, along with Earl's eternal respect. Chances are you won't leave as a challenge winner, just another satisfied, and extremely full customer - all thanks to Earl, his family and his delicious sandwiches.

You can find Sandwich Master at 145 Route 202 in Rindge, New Hampshire, and online at sandwichmaster.net.
