2 Workers At Lowell Utility Site Hurt When Car Crashes

LOWELL (AP) — Police say two workers at a utility construction site in Lowell were hurt, one seriously, after a car went out of control.

The accident happened at about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday as workers from New England Utility Constructors were preparing a trench for a natural gas line repair project.

Police said two detail officers were guiding traffic around the site when a vehicle driven by a 76-year-old woman suddenly accelerated down the wrong side of the road, barely missing one of the officers before striking the front bucket of a Bobcat machine. The bucket spun and hit a worker standing near the trench.

The man was hospitalized with head, neck and back injuries.

A second worker suffered a leg injury.

The driver of the car refused medical treatment and her 84-year-old husband was being evaluated.
