Elderly Wrong-Way Driver Hits State Police Cruiser On Cape

BARNSTABLE (CBS) – A State Trooper was hurt when a driver slammed head-on into his cruiser late Wednesday night on the Cape.

Officers received a call about a wrong-way driver around 11:30 p.m. on Route 6 in Barnstable.

Police said the warning had been issued because the 80-year-old man has a "medical condition that should preclude him from driving."

Two troopers found the pickup truck driver as he was heading east on the westbound side of the road.

The officers slowed down traffic behind their cruisers to protect other drivers and that's when the Ford Ranger pickup slammed head-on into one of the cruisers.

One trooper was taken to Cape Cod Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.  He was not identified.

The pickup truck driver was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

"He will be summonsed on charges of negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a state highway wrong way violation. The department will also file an immediate threat license revocation notice with the Registry of Motor Vehicles," State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement Thursday.

"We are not releasing his name because of his medical condition. No further information is expected to be released on this incident."
