Woman Dies After Being Struck By Car In South End Crosswalk

BOSTON (CBS) -- An elderly woman has died and another suffered serious injuries after they were struck by an SUV in the South End Wednesday afternoon.

The women were transported to Boston Medical Center after a black Nissan struck them in a crosswalk at Tremont and West Brookline streets.

Pizza Store owner Ghassan Samaha ran to help after the crash.

"I came out and saw black car and two ladies on the floor shaking and crying," Samaha says.

He says the driver, also an older woman, was very upset.

He says the two women on the ground were in bad shape. His employee says he saw it happen. "One flew to the front and one flew to other side," Francisco Gonvalev says. "One had a head injury and the other one had a twisted leg."

Police say one of the women hit in the crosswalk died and the other suffered serious injuries.

On the scene, police say the driver was having chest pains.

Police closed down at least four blocks of Tremont Street for hours while they investigated what happened.

The driver told witnesses, she simply couldn't see.

"She was crying," Samaha says. "She said the sun was in her face and it's true you can't see."

And Samaha said the sun is a big problem on Tremont, making this a very dangerous stretch for both drivers and anyone trying to cross.
