Everett High Football Player's Condition Upgraded After Stabbing

EVERETT (CBS/AP) — An Everett High School football player who was stabbed over the weekend was upgraded to fair condition Monday.

Running back Marvens Fedna, 16, was stabbed in the back and hand at the corner of Broadway and Chestnut Street in Everett at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.

School Superintendent Frederick Foresteire said Fedna was walking home from a party with some friends at the time of the attack. He says Fedna and his friends ran from a group of people throwing knives at them in the area of Broadway and Chestnut Street, when Fedna stopped to help a friend who couldn't get away. That's when Fedna was stabbed and seriously hurt.

Fedna was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital where he underwent surgery.

On their way into school on Monday, students told WBZ-TV's Susie Steimle they were stunned.

Junior Louis Marsh said Fedna is a "very well-known kid," and he "(wishes) him luck. Hope he gets better."

"He's selfless, likes to make sure everyone is alright," Marsh said. "I'm proud of him for trying, but sometimes it's not the greatest thing to do."

Fedna's classmates say they're hoping for a speedy recovery, and they are upset about the violence occurring so close to home.

"I think it's shocking that it happened in Everett," says senior Tracy Noelsaint. "In the summer, there was another shooting. I'm shocked that this happened in our city."

Student Joseph LaMonica says Fedna is "a really good kid. (He gets) good grades, always tries to help people, great football player. It's just really sad."

The superintendent says many of the friends who were with Fedna are teammates, but he was the only one injured.

There have been no arrests.

Police would not comment on the circumstances of the incident. No other information is available at this point in the investigation.

Fedna's 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon gave Everett a 12-7 upset win over St. John's Prep.
